When roads and highways are jammed and the classic Sunday trip becomes more of a chore than a pleasure, it’s nice to rediscover places within a stone’s throw from your house, which you normally would ignore, but which can be a welcome surprise. This is what happened to me one day in August. It was impossible to drive away: The village fair attracted herds of people that, with their cars, clogged all streets. But the day was really splendid; blue sky without a cloud, a light breeze, the ideal weather for a walk. And so we decided to “explore” the bike path along the river. We had seen it many times before from our car; we even parked at its entry, but we never were curious enough, or had enough time and energy, to go on it. Well, I had no idea it was that relaxing. There was not a soul and our dogs could run free, snuff at their hearts’ content and plunge in the river. I even found the vegetable gardens and their shacks attractive, which I usually judge as dumps. Today they looked cutely naïve. On one side of the path, nice ripe fruits and sunflowers, with their sunken heads, and grape vines twisting on fences; on the other side, the green grass, the white pebbles and the clean, fresh water of the river. And we were not in Austria or Tyrol, but behind our house!
