The Casoncello Fairy Gardens

giardini del casoncelloSome time ago I visited the “Casoncello Gardens.” It is on the hills around Bologna, close to Loiano, in Scascoli. As soon as I arrived, I felt like Alice in Wonderland, passing through a small wooden gate and entering in that garden, full of colors and smells, magic corners and enchanted atmosphere. I like it because there are no huge spaces, but a wealth of narrow paths and a series of small areas, each distinguished by rare plants and special color combinations. There is also a small vegetable garden, so well tended and cute that it looks like a garden, too. It is an inspiring and fascinating place, as fascinating as its history and its creator, Gabriella. While she guides the tour of her garden, she readily tells how she started this adventure, how about twenty years ago, evicted, she decided to revamp her family’s farm. Attached to the farm there was also some land and it is there that her passion for gardening started and her small big jewel took form. Gabriella described her experience in a book “ I giardini nati nel vento” (Gardens born in the Wind,) inspiration for any garden fan.

Speaking of flowers, I read that in Florence, in the coffee shop of the Boboli Gardens, it’s possible to try handmade, iris-flavored chocolates. Funny!
