The Castles of Ludwig: Neuschwanstein
January 18th, 2007 by admin
Neuschwanstein, which you can see in the photo above, taken from the famous Marienbrücke Bridge, is for sure one of the most beautiful castles in the world, if not the most beautiful, at least for its spectacular exterior. But, who was Ludwig II, the builder of all those marvelous castles? He lived between 1845 and 1886, was a great friend of the composer Richard Wagner (Ludwig was apparently homosexual) and was more of a dreamer than a leader or a good ruler. Actually during his time he was criticized hard because he loved to spend all his money building these impressive and marvelous architectural works, instead of dedicating himself to politics (which he hated.)
He was loved by his people, that probably (like we) appreciated his creations, but of course he was despised by the politicians, by the merchant guilds, and in general by the nobles. In fact toward the end of his short life, a committee of doctors, commissioned by the very Bavarian government, pronounced him “crazy!!â€
We cannot but appreciate his works and, though during his lifetime tourism probably didn’t exist, now the Bavarian government should thank him for the amount of tourists that his buildings regularly attract every year!!!
The castle, seen from the bottom, exactly from “his feet:†huge!Â
Here it’s seen from the meadows of the surrounding planes, still not developed. Actually, if you look at the valley from far away, you have the feeling of still being in the 1800s, since the Bavarians had the good taste of not building thousands of tourist attractions all around…!
This photo, instead, was taken during the short walk to climb to the castle by foot.Â
This is the famous Marienbrücke Bridge! You can see that it is crowded… If you get dizzy, stay away!
