Ludwig’s Castles: Linderhof
January 29th, 2007 by admin
During our trip to Germany, some years ago, we stopped for a few days in Oberammergau from where it’s easy to go to Ludwig’s castles.
The first one I went to visit was Linderhof, built in 1874-1878, which is in Ettal, at a little over an hour’s distance from Oberammergau and from the other two castles (the most famous is Neuschwanstein.) Compared with the other two, it is the smallest, but in some respects, it’s also the most taken-care-of (actually it’s the only one that was really finished.) It’s in Baroque style and has an enormous park, including a lake with swans (his favorite animals.) In the park there are other architectural curiosities, including an artificial cave, built exclusively for performing Wagner’s operas, whose performances Ludwig organized there, and of which he was the only spectator!
