My travel to Isola del Giglio, a small island in the southern Tuscany, near the town of Grosseto, dates back to the spring 2004.

As I said, it is a very small island, but full of interesting stuff to see. Being so small however, is best seen traveling by feet. Indeed, already in the period we went there (end of April) there was already too much “traffic” for its capabilities! In some spots was really hard to pass through, even if there wasn’t really so many people!

We got there taking the ferry from “Porto Santo Stefano”. It is fast, being the island so near to the mainland, takes about half an hour to get there. Nothing in common with the neverending travels to the Sardinia!

Once arrived in Giglio Porto, we instantly noticed a very particular atmosphere, like a place where the time stood still. There were buildings, signs, “new stuff”, but for many aspects the place was reminding me of the years 1970, with some really old building (I love such stuff).

You could rightfully wonder why we went there in april, rather than summer: well, first because the climate was already nice in spring, even if we couldn’t swim. But mostly because it was the blooming period! and being a “wild” island, it has lot of various spontaneous species of flowers all around the coastal line, with wonderful colors and special and very intense flavours.

If you’re looking to relax nearby the seaside and at the same time admire the wonderful nature’s show, like us in that period, without the need of taking long sunbaths on the shore, then we heartly recommend to go there during the spring months!

Coming next, a description of what we did / saw in our brief one week holiday on that wonderful island.
